NATURE OF ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA

Antigua & Barbuda is a colourful mix of nature. From the bright colours of the many flowers, fruits and vegetables, the green vegetation of the rainforest, to the clear blue waters of the beaches with white and pink sand, the natural aspects of the islands are a beauty to behold. The typical vegetation consists of
mahogany,
giant bamboo,
rubber trees,
orchids. Many of the flowers were imported from the colonizers and are
flamboyant and
bougainvillea, of different sizes and colours. Lots of fruit trees were also introduced by foreigners and include
coconut palms,
papaya,
mango,
breadfruit tree,
avocado,
banana,
guava. Market Day is a vivid display of the local fresh fruits and vegetables in their wide range of colours including purple eggplants, brown ground provisions, pink sweet potatoes, red mangoes, yellow pumpkins and green papayas.

The islands are home to a combination of domestic and exotic animals. The lesser known exotic animals are the West Indian Whistling Duck and the Hermit Crab. Over 140 variety of birds can be found on the islands. The yellow-breasted bananaquit is one of the most common, heron, Frigate Bird, which own a nature reserve in Barbuda, and Brown Pelican made their home in the numerous mangrove lagoons.
The multicoloured coral reefs are also home to many tropical submarine life forms including many types of fish, sea turtles and stingrays. The Hawksbill turtle nests on Long Island, off the northwest coast of Antigua. The mongoose is frequently seen, brought to the islands during the 18th century. Tarantulas keep themselves secluded in remote dry areas.
There are several mangrove environments providing a home and breeding ground for many of the smaller creatures of the animal kingdom.
